the way I read 110.26 (F)(1)if its directly above the panelboard (in a space eqaul to the width & depth)it would have to be 6' above the equipment or above a structural ceiling.
If it were spaced beyond the depth of the equipment, then you would only need to meet the headroom requirement in 110.26(E)

I agree with Auggie on the code rules.
That aside do the future electricians a favor and hang it out far enough to be able get behind it.

I don't see 110.26(F) as applying. The transformer is part of the electrical installation, therefore the transformer would not have to be 6' above the panel. I agree with 110.26(E), however.

From a practical standpoint, it sure would block
your conduits, the prevention of which I feel is a major intent of that section.

Unless you are mounting on a concrete wall and it is 75kVA or less, we ask for a structural engineer to design.
We look for 1/2 sleeve type anchors and using the factory wall brackets on the 75kVA or less.
More specifically regarding Ryan's post 110.26(F)(1)(a) states....dedicated to the electrical installation. Goes on....foriegn to the electrical installation.
So I see the XFMR as ok.

Auggie: That is not what is meant by requiring "dedicated space." The point is that they don't want a kitchen, office cubicle, or meeting room in the same space as the MCC. The NEC will allow you to put a transformer over a panelboard, so long as you meet the spacing requirements (clearance, headroom, etc.).
The NEC does not care if you run into trouble trying to route your conduits around the transformer. That is a design issue, not a code issue.

That would be a b _ _ _ h,without encroaching the working space of the xfmr.

Sometimes I get caught up in the wording of a question and really miss the point that applies.
I do see the requirements of 110.26 and I understand that this transformer is part of the electrical system.
Some questions that I think should be addressed before hanging this transformer are: What was the crime it committed? Does it carry capitol punishment? Did the transformer have a fair trial and was it found guilty?
If any of these questions are answered with a no then hanging this transformer could be called a lynching and would be a crime in itself?
