I finished my Xmas shopping today :D . While out, I went looking for a new stereo, as my old one is on the way out. Well needless to say I came home without one, as I was totally overwhelmed with the choices  . I have not kept up with the new equipment and will have to do some homework before I actually purchase the new stereo.

I would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season. Eat, drink and be merry!!!

Re: Happy Holiday!!!

I know the feeling, I just bought a new computer. Talk about choices! My old one ran at 500 MHz, had 129 k of RAM, and a 6 GB hard drive. The cheapest computer on the market is better than that. The new one runs at 2.8 GHz, 1 MB cache (is that RAM?), and a 40 GB hard drive.

The tough part is getting all the data transferred from the old one to the new one and all the software loaded. I couldn't even find quicken but I did find the instruction book (that didn't help). I downloaded it from the Intuit web site (51 MB in 2 minutes, not bad). :D

Re: Happy Holiday!!!

Charlie ,your new computer was out dated before you got it home.A fast way to move them folders of info is to hook your old hard drive up as a slave in the new one.Programs usually need to be added the slow way.

Re: Happy Holiday!!!

Ouch, Jim, you are really hurting me. By the way, I am writing to CD-ROMs to transfer information (I don't know how to hook them together). :D

Re: Happy Holiday!!!

Sorry Charlie but thats how fast electronics is going.Transfering is easy.Pull old hard drive out and add it to the ribbon on new one.Change the pin on back of old one to slave. From there its just a matter of dragging them to new one.No data will be lost on old one.

Re: Happy Holiday!!!

Jim, it can't be that easy. It sounds like I could also just leave my old hard drive in place and use it as a second drive for backup files. I am just about finished with the transfer but you are pulling my leg aren't you?

Re: Happy Holiday!!!

The easiest way to transfer your data to the new drive is with a utility like Norton Ghost. It will write a mirror image of your old hard drive to a CD then you can install the new drive and transfer all of the data along with the programs to your new drive.

Charlie,

Jim's got it right. I have always done something similar when changing to a new computer or a new (bigger) Hard drive.

Re: Happy Holiday!!!

I haven't done any shopping yet. I probably won't do most of it until the day before. (no joke!)

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! :D

Re: Happy Holiday!!!

Charlie, yes you could keep it as a second hard drive.Actually many do use 2 hard drives to save important files. With the operating system being on one and info on the other. This way if you crash you do not lose them files.I suggest you at least partition part of that new 40 gb to keep a copy of important stuff. Also not a bad idea to just buy another hard drive so you have 2.They are cheap 80 gb can be had for under $100.I store thousands of music mp3 files and would cry if they got lost,so have them backed up on other hard drives and on DVD.Well worth it since hundreds of hours are involved.

Re: Happy Holiday!!!

Well, another supporter of Jim's method.

This is how I do it also.

On the company system, we run a second hard drive that just has the company info.

Like Jim said, if the main drive crashes, yank-out the back-up and put it in another system while the other is being fixed.

Cache is a type of memory that resides on the CPU itself. The bigger the better. It accounts for almost 50% of the CPU cost. Thats the only difference between a Pentium and a Celeron. The celeron has less L1 cache so costs much less...Downfall....Slooooooower..There are 3 layers of cache L1 l2 l3 the 1st is the most important.

I know we should be talking about the NFP-70 not computers. Just my 2 cents

Re: Happy Holiday!!!

I just came from my son's Cub Scout meeting. I got to dress as Santa and give out presents to the little ones. Wow, a cool experience. Now I can't get "jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way" out of my head. :)
