Hardwired ovens and cooktops

Merry Christmas

Do most here provide a locking means on the circuit breaker for a hardwired residential wall oven or cooktop?

FMC whips are provided on the appliance and no way to put a male cord end on it for disconnecting means.

Yes a lock out device on the breaker is required if there are no other means of disconnect.

But doesn't mean it will be installed or even used. Haven't seen one on any resi system yet.
Well it's required absent a local disconnecting means so if you're not seeing them in the wild then the inspectors aren't doing their job very well. It's likely that no one will ever use them but that's a different issue.

Honestly I quit putting them in the panel some time ago.

Just recently I had a final inspection. Inspector caught it and I needed to add one.

It was never the cost (under $10) that kept me from not using them it just seemed to be something no one would ever use.

Going forward they’ll be installed.

Yeah it's 10 bucks less in your pocket but what's the cost of going back to install one if you fail? I would probably just install it because it's required even if no one will ever use it. FWIW when I recently replaced the service in my house I didn't install one. 🤫

When I worked for a large residential outfit back in the '90s, we installed them on everything that didn't have a local disconnect.

I think I've only installed one in the last 20 years. And that one was because I failed an inspection. Nobody looks for them here

That secret is safe with me.
