Hi...can we eliminate harmonics in a medium voltage line? considering mostly households are using electronic appliances. This would also contribute in Capacitor breakdown.

Thanks.

This issue should really be addressed by the equipment manufacturers...the electrical system should not have to be changed to support poorly designed equipment. I understand that in Europe there are rules that require manufacturers to add filters and other devices in their equipment to prevent this type of problem.

i am a recent EE grad, while in school i took an electromagnetic interference class which covers the topic your inquiring about. there was a lab on campus that test for conducted emission. this is an fcc approved lab.

all eletronics that uses a plug must undergo a conducted emission test. this is the reason why on the power cord on all electronics the wired is looped in a ferite bar for filtering.

I don't think that the FCC testing is for harmonics and other power quality problems remain confined to the electrical distrubution system...they just don't want external interference with the air waves that they regulate.

harmonics will always be present in an electrical system today. the question now would be "Are harmonics affecting anything in the system?"

one technique would be to place your capacitors one voltage level higher. if the harmonic sources are in the 230V, place the capacitors on the 460V level.
as I understand, most of the household appliances are at the low voltage level.
