Harmonics

I realize that the third, seventh, and ninth harmonics are what most filters are set up to correct concerning unwanted EMF, but I have forgotten the reason or technical theory of why they are the bad guys! If anyone knows, I would appreciate your POSITIVE input. ( I know that they add to the distortion, heat, and kvar on the lines)..Thanks.

Depends on the load single phase or 3 phase.

Those items and the associated problems that they cause pretty much sums it up.

they are bad guys because the waveforms are additive and do not cancel each other out

Thanks, I found an article written by Richard P. Bingham on Google, "Understanding the Facts". His article was great and I think I understand harmonics more clearly. I appreciate everyones input.

the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th harmonics are the most common, which is why they are the most 'popular' targets of filter manufacturers.
