we are designing a hay barn and the electrical inspector has said that
the panel and receptacles shall be dust proof, i am looking at art 547
and i don't see it,
any help
thanks sleepy

Take a look at 547.1(A). Is this an agricultural building where excessive dust or dust with water may accumulate?

If so then provisions of Article 547 do apply.

JMHO,

Chris

Response Hay Barn

sleepy here, no water, no damp conditions, we are in a metal
building, with no open openning.

My personal opinion is that a hay barn is an agricultural building where excessive dust my accumulate.

547.5(C)(1) requires that equipment, boxes, conduit bodies, and fittings installed in Ag buildings, where excessive dust may be present, shall be designed to minimize the entrance of dust and shall have no openings (such as holes for attachment screws) through which dust could enter the enclosure.

I went to do some work at a small horse barn, maybe 4 stalls at most, existing 24 circuit panel, (NOT dustproof) you would not believe the amount of hay that finds its way inside that panel... it really is incredible...

I agree with the above posters. If the panel is in the same room as hay or horses, it will allow an amazing amount of dust in a short time.

We switched to compressed alfalfa cubes in 50 lb. bags a while back, and I still see plenty of dust in the room. Unprocessed hay/alfalfa puts off a lot of dust, and measures should be taken to keep it under control.

I once saw a 24 space indoor Siemens load center installed in a loafing shed that had over a quarter inch of dust in the bottom, and it was only in service for about 6 months at the time. It was installed in a walkway seperated from the animals by panels, I think it was screwed to the wall. Normal plastic romex connectors were installed (if I recall correctly) and contributed to the accumulation. There was a good deal of dust present on top of the lugs where the feeder conductors were terminated.

I put my panel in the feed room and use weather proof boxes and covers with GFCI protection and my lights are the weather proof ones with glass covers and cage on it. I wire all this with PVC or EMT and sometimes Flex. Always putting outlets where horses can't get to them. You wouldn't believe things I've seen just wired with romax , panels in steps going into hay lofts or even in the loft. I have turned down jobs if the H.O. won't let me redo all wiring . Semper Fi

The AHJ has the final say. In this area if the building was given an ag. waiver (let's you skip most building inspections and permits), the will enforce everything in 547 except the equipotential ground plane no matter the intended use. All recept. must be GFI, and fittings must be dust/water proof and all light fixtures must be guarded and have a shatter proof or acrylic type lense. It really can drive the cost up on an installation.
