Anyone could help me to specify the Hazard Radii for Natural gases 80% CH4 + 12% C2H6 at 50 barg, from Flange, Valve, Vent DN 8 inch, motor and pig launcher and receiver. Our main pipeline is 22 inch DN, and 12 inch DN of branches - in accordance with API RP 500 and IP-15.

Thank you very much indeed.

Where is the pipeline located? One of the two standards you have referenced doesn't apply. RP500 uses the US ?Division? standard. IP15 reflects the British implementation of the IEC ?Zone? method. The two systems are not compatible. (The truth is the US ?Zone? system isn?t really compatible with IEC either)

You appear to be using SI units rather than US although both are acceptable in the US. Flow rates are also relevant to the analysis.

Thank you in advance for your help.
As your requirement, i could support more information as following:
The classification will be "Zone". Zone 1 and Zone 2 will be applied.
The gas pipeline locate above ground, pressure of design for main pipeline is 71 barg, and for piping in the distribution station is 51 barg. Exact percent of gas component is: Methane 89%, Ethane 4%, Propane 2.38%, and others 4.62%. Pipeline Peak blowdown Flow rate is 165,394 Kg/h, and Station Peak blowdown Flow rate are 105,600 kg/h, 65,190 kg/h, 36,367 kg/h, 31,150 kg/h (at the Vent Stack).PCV skid blowdown vent 6.5mm DN, Manual piping blow down vent is 18 mm DN.
Regards.

Again I ask where the project is located. This appears to be an "IP15" job from your descriptions. It is not a recognized standard in the US. I am familiar with IP15, but my most recent copy is from the mid 90s and it is in storage.

This project is located in Vietnam Socialist Republic. I am on behalf of client (Project Management Board). This project is on progress. Hazardous radii shall be in accordance with IP15 (third edition-July 2005) and API RP 500.

Thank you very much for your help.

I must repeat the methodologies reflected in IP15 and API RP500 are not compatible.

Your pressure and flow rates are high. I would anticipate hazard radii

  • from flanges and valves: Zone 2, 3m
  • from vents: Zone 1, 3m
  • from motors: not relevant
  • from compressors: Zone 2, 15m
  • from pig launcher and receiver: Zone 1, 1.5m from opening; Zone 2, 5m from opening
These are estimates only. They need to be reviewed by a qualified individual familiar with the details of the project. This site is not intended to be the responsible engineering entity.

Thank you very much, Bob.
See you again and good luck for you !
