If the tag on the piece of equipment specifies a HCAR breaker you must use one.

most of the time its an either or propositon. I use the breaker for the supply to the disconnect, and then fuses at the unit, time delay. This is a matter of my personal opinion though. I like the ability to use a lower fuse rating ( with in spec's) for better protection of the ac unit. A lot of ac guys use a non-fused disconnect.
