how is everyone installing the cables for tv's.. i usually run hdmi, i always have to ordered it and go back.. kinda a pain in the butt.. i know some of the big stores are using rgb, and making up ends on site

i'm just trying to make my life easier


they are also charging $300 to hang a tv

There's no one answer for all installations, just a bunch of questions. For example:

Will they want sound from the TV, or will it only be a monitor?
What will do the source selectioning, the TV or an AV receiver?
What will do the TV tuning, the TV or a cable/satellite box?
Will you need to run the center speaker wire to the same place?

HDMI seems universal these, days, but I'm still a fan of component video.

Fitting a flexible tube you can re-pull cabling through is always a safe bet.
 
i have ran cat 5 a few times, they make a junction from cat 5 to a short hdmi.. just trying to finf the best way

the big stores like best buy and the former circuit city are charging 300 to hang tv's.. plus more $ to install the cables... it something that i need to start doing more of

But what is your point about this? Too high? Too low? just right? easy money? Just curious.
 
easy money. everyone does it different, just wanted to see how others are " installing the cables" i have done a bunch of them, and would like to do more.
 
i have been told by directv that HD VOD can only be viewed w/ an HDMI connection.

its rumored that other DRM protections are coming that will inhibit the use of component video.

The last few jobs i've done i did HDMI.

DRM is one of the main reasons I dislike digital connections.

Component video, which is analog, is every bit (pardon the pun) as hi-def.

absolutely; but when the component video outputs are disabled by the DRM, its not going to do you much good.

and that looks to be the direction the technology is headed.

I have several of a particular DVD player that upconverts to the component output. It's no longer sold, but the firmware can be "down-dated" on later units which have that feature disabled.

My entire HT system uses only component video; no digital. If DirecTV ever disabled HD via component, I'll start stocking up on receivers that don't let them do that. If that doesn't work, I'll cry.
 
helios is the only company i know of that is still making an upconverting DVD that outputs on component.


i have a HTPC and using powerdvd9, it will only play video if I use the dvi-to-hdmi cable from the computer to the TV.

originally i had it connected w/ a mini-din component adapter, but the newer software will not longer send video over a non HDCP connection.
