Questions are in regard to health care facilities, operating rooms (anesthetizing locations) and medical equipment. Can medical equipment cords be extended up to 18 feet?

1) Questions are being posed as to extention cords allowed in anesthizing locations?
2) NFPA 99 (2002 edition) 8.4.1.2.4 (1 % 5) referr to cords shall be continuous with no limit in length. I have heard that a portable electrical appliance (Medical Device?) cord can be up to 18 feet max. However, the NEC states only 6ft allowed and that is how equipment is shipped.
3) Line isulation panels. From my understanding they are only required in wet operationg rooms up to 300 micro amps max.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I think for any appliance provided with a factory assembled cord and plug, modifying the cord or plug violates the UL listing. In other words, the product is no longer UL listed, and it no longer has UL certifying that it is safe.

An OR is the last place I would want to do this.

A UL listing is not "automatically" voilated by replacing a cord or plug if the device was shipped with a cord and plug from the factory. The UL listing only applies to the manufacturer of the device. It is up to the AHJ to judge (with UL's assistance) any field modifications.
