I am in the process of starting a full service Hospital in KY. It was brought to my attention from the GC that when they did a project in Arizona the inspector made them put a convenience receptacle on each wall of the patient rooms. He stated this was a requirement by the NEC. They had to go back and add a receptacle under the windows in each room. I researched and have not found any such requirement. Do you know of any?

517.18 (general care areas) and 517.19 (critical care areas) do not say receptacles on all walls. Specific requirements are listed for patient areas here...anyone else?

It may have been a local code or job spec.

I would contact your local AHJ and whoever else may have a say in the electrical portion of the work to see what may not be covered in the prints.

Do you have any more info on this AZ job. It may have been a local law that is not NEC but enforcable in that AHJ. 517.18, 517.19 cover the care areas. I can only guess as to why the inspector would request a conv outlet. Get the full story from the GC (if you can).

It is not NEC, It should belongs to local health department rule. In Texas, they require each wall of patient room and radiology room need to have one outlet as minimum.

Just a suggestion that has helped me in the past (if the project is already underway) rough in a "mock" room, have the AHJ, DOH, and anyone else necessary walk through it and give you a go ahead. Then just wire 200 the same way. Was helpful on a nursing home we did.
