  1. I have recently come across two separate exterior Heat Pump Disconnects with Surge Protectors installed on the side. Is this now common practice? Is it a code requirement or just safety for the equipment?
  2. The second one I came across had # 6 Aluminum for the Line, and copper to the Load, and a Surge Protector spliced into the Line side with wire nuts not rated for Al/CU.
  3. The Polaris connectors I normally use are for dry location only. Is Inside the Disconnect dry or damp? I understood exterior Disconnects to be a damp location. Does anyone know of a small 3 port connector good for a # 6 Aluminum that is small enough to fit in a Disconnect and suitable for a damp location?

Put the surge protector on the load side. Easier to replace if it takes a hit, by pulling the disconnect.
