We have a heat pump that has a 10 KW heat strip accessory installed. The HVAC guy says we need two disconnects. It has the split breaker accessory installed in the unit, but does not have the lug kit to jumper between the two breakers to bring one feed in. Can I run my single feed in and use a polaris lug to split it before the breakers?

He says that's what the manufacturer suggests, one for the heat strip, and one for the unit. Any of these we have done in the past we only bring one feed and it splits in the unit. It can be done either way, but I prefer one 90A feed rather than one 60A and one 30A. The existing units on site have only one feed, but have the lug kit installed in them. HVAC guy say's this manufactuer (Goodman) doesn't sell that lug kit.

I have never wired a 10 kw unit that took more than one circuit. I usually run the feeder, set a disco and wire the unit. Got a model number and brand?

Do the math for me. Would the 10K strips need larger fuses than the heat pump???

If so, you would need 2 disco's or two sets of fuses somewhere.

Is this a heat pump package where the entire unit is outdoors? I have seen the gas packs but not seen the heat pump packs.

True- if this is a package unit it could require 2 circuits to it........if the breakers are built integral to the unit(i have seen alot lately) they may act as a disconnect.

The unit has 2 breakers in it now a 60A and a 30A, it just doesn't have the lug kit on the line side of the breakers to bring in a single feed.

run one feeder to the unit properly sized and tap off that feeder to supply each breaker in the unit

I bought the disco's today and thats what I am going to do. I think it is a waste to run separate feeds.

I'm surprised they installed the 30. They normally install two 60's---seeing that the purpose is to disconnect only.

TWO power sources should be noted all over this equipment including at means of disconnect and marked inside equipment and at service disconnects!
