Eli,
Per 110.3.B have only used manufacture's recommended guidelines when using heating cables. Of course I have only used listed cables too. I think the inherent problem is short circuit failure with the potential of serious injury or death.

A couple things to think about.
1. From what I have been told, the heating cables typically sold for de-icing gutters have a fairly high failure rate, including failures that cause fires. I would be very cautious of how I instaleld such a cable and made sure I used the highest quality unit I could find.
2, IMO, if it's important enough to spend the money to heat trace process piping, make sure you include monitoring for failure as part of the project AND insulation.

Thanks for the heads-up information regarding failure rates. I have been considering installing some of these cables on my eves in certain areas to control ice build-up. Now, I will take a very close look before I make a purchase.
Are there any particular ones that could be recommended?
