A customer is asking for recommendations for a cord set for some new flooring machines they just purchased. They are 480V 3 phase 50A machines and they are looking to need 400-500' of cord for each one. I was wondering what kind of cord I should recommend to them and what kind of reels they would need to handle the cords. There main issue is safety with the 480V cords. Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Heavy duty cord and reels.

I guess mining cable is what comes to mind for me.

Wow, though. 400-500 feet? That seems quite excessive to me. I know that Appleton makes some nice reels, but I don't think you'll find much of anything for 500 feet of (#2?) gauge. I suppose that if it were my customer, I'd recommend them to have a local welding shop custom fabricate a reel and manual winder setup.

Re: Heavy duty cord and reels.

Just some ballpark figures.

Portable Power Cable ? EPDM Insulation ? CSPE Jacket ? 2000 Volts - 90?C Wet or Dry ? -40?C

500' 6-4 cord 1.1" diameter, 440 pounds

500' 4-4 cord 1.27" diameter, 600 pounds.

What ever you come up with will need to be big built tough and moving it will be a chore.

Re: Heavy duty cord and reels.

the weight of the cable alone is it's own biggest enemy. you should consider the purchase of a cable with a internal support rope to keep the cable from being damaged by pulling or lifting. an example is a spider stage on a high rise building -- without the internal support rope the cable needs replacement every two years --- with the internal support it will last ten years....

Re: Heavy duty cord and reels.

The machine is a floor scraper and it will be used in large retail stores. I miss spoke in my original post, the machine will draw 15A, and I was figuring #6 should do the trick for 500'. Actually #8 would be large enough, it would have an 11 amp drop over the 500'. Thank you for the replies so far, I am looking into some of the different types of cables now.

Re: Heavy duty cord and reels.

SJ or SO cord from Home Depot .55 cents a foot.
Just make sure you use 1 size too big. I would use 10-4 2 hots a neutral and a safety ground.
Make them a 5/8" plywood folding V with support chains and hang the long cord on it when done flake it around the 4 hooks on the plywood and away they go to the next job

Bye
