What is the maximum height a panel disconnect can be from floor level? We are mounting a panel above a machine. Thanks, Kevin.

Re: height of disconnect switch

When you say above a machine.Does that mean above and behind it or adjasent to it

Re: height of disconnect switch

I am confused about another point. You asked about the height of the disconnect, but then said that the panel itself would be above some ?machine.? So what is above the machine, the panel, the disconnect, or both, or is the disconnect within the panel?

You need to look at 110.26(A)(3). The working space has to be clear from the floor to 6.5 feet above the floor. You can?t put a machine within that space, unless you satisfy that article.

(p.s. I think that Wayne was asking essentially the same question, and has the same concern.)

Re: height of disconnect switch

Does Exception #2 to 408.8(A) in any way modify the requirements of 110.26?

Re: height of disconnect switch

I think not. Regardless of the location of an item (provided it is in a legal location), you still need the working clearances (front, side, and vertical).

Re: height of disconnect switch

Don,
Are you talking about the "unless a noncombustible shield..." part?

I don't think anything in 408.8(A) would modify the requirements of 110.26. 408.8(B) confirms that 110.26 must still be complied with in addition to anything that 408.8(A) might add.

Re: height of disconnect switch

100% correct charlie sounded like there was to be a disc. mounted behind a machine therefore no working clearances.

Re: height of disconnect switch

The purpose of the local disconnect is to provide a means to isolate the equipment in the field. When you remove the requirement for this disconnect to be readily accessible, I'm not sure that you don't also remove the 110.26 work space rules. Many of these disconnects are installed where the 110.26 space is not and cannot be provided. An example would be the local disconnect for a piece of equipment that is installed above a drop ceiling. There is no way to provide a 30" wide by 36" deep work space above the lay in grid. The grid itself interferes with the workspace that is required by 110.26, yet this is a very common commercial installation.

Re: height of disconnect switch

What is the disconnect for?
For example, if you have a motor with two disconnects, one is required to be readily accessbile and the other is only required to be accessbile, two disconnects may be required to have one in sight from the the controller and one in sight from the motor.
