We just wired a 14 bed room house 3 floors, insp says our nm cable to the elevator disconnect has to be in conduit.
The house is all in romex we have done quite a few of these large house's with no problem untill now.
He is quote art 620.11 (c) (d) feeder branch cir. 620.13 says nothing about not use of nm.
art 334 not permited in hoistways or on elevators.
It just does not make any sense why you would need to run supply in conduit
or mc.
In the elev room i can understand.
The elevator is not required.
thanks.

I see no reason why the article he referenced would apply to the feeder to a disconnect. Even if it did, it only states the type of conductor required within the conduit not that conduit must be used.

620.11 definitely applies to the feeder.

But 620.11(C) does not require a raceway, all it requires is a certain insulation on the conductors if you use a raceway.

620.11(D) specifically mentions the use of cables.

I think the inspector is mistaken.

05' NEC 620.11(C)(D) covers conductors in raceways in a hoistway/elevator shaft. Your building type allows NM and wiring to the disconnect outside the shaft and you did not install NM in the shaft...... so would not be an issue per 620 unless I overlooked.....When something is not required (as in an elevator) but if you install it one must still meet the requirements of what one installed.

Although I believe this to be true I can't find specific wording that applies this only to the conductors within the shaft.

Okay, find the wording that says it applies to conductors other than those within the shaft.

I disagree. IMO that section applies to the entire installation, not just shaft work.

On the other hand 620.21 does apply to wiring in the shaft.

My response is based on the 2008.

It can be found in 620.1.
