I have a new home construction that the electrician did obvious mistakes(Which I can only come to the conclusion were not accidental). # 14 wire on 20 amp break in several parts of the home,no 20amp branch circuit in dining room, No ground fault on outside recepticles,No grounding of metal boxes,NO ground on ground pole on switches,etc.,etc. I live in Illinois in an area with no electrical inspection(the county will not get invovled),Illinois building com. NO help,Attorney general will do nothing on new home construction. WHERE DO I REPORT THIS GUY ! THANKS FOR THE TIME,I JUST DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO TURN SO THIS GUY DOESN'T BURN A HOUSE DOWN,HE is a licensed electrician

Re: help!! bad electrician

Who is he licenced with? Who is the general contractor? Is the mortage company aware of the violations? If the homeowners has hired the contractor to do the work, then the homeowner might have the right to not pay the bill until such time as the install is code compliant. The contract would have to be reviewed to find out who is responcible. A private inspection agency could be contracted to review the install if litigation may be pending. What part do you have in this project? Are you the owner, contractor, or the guy that got beat out of the job by a low bidder? The main issue is the NEC is a minimum standard and should be followed regardles of location or inspection requirements. Just my 2 cents worth, what do others think?

Re: help!! bad electrician

This may sound like a silly question but since the NEC is the "National" electrical code, is it not mandated by the federal government or is compliance only voluntary by the next highest governing body or AHJ, such as a state or local government?

I didn't think there was anywhere in the United States that did not require compliance with the NEC at the very least.

Re: help!! bad electrician

I am the home owner and now the general contractor, I will probably begoing to litigation but, Is there some one to report this to in Illiois

Re: help!! bad electrician

This NEC? Forum is for those in the electrical and related industries. Questions of a "How-To" nature by persons not involved in the electrical industry will be removed without notice.

You have already gotten some very good advice, this is not the place to get advise of a legal nature. IMO, that is what you need.
