Help!! New apprentice needs help on calculations

We have a new apprentice that needs help on calculations. Since I have recently passed the masters in SC...... my boss has me trying to help him. I'm not good at explaining things... His test is Saturday for the journeyman's. Is there a website that I can direct him to that explains it in plain English? He gets very confused with all the technical terms (so do I!) I think he will be a good electrician, his work is very neat he can find things in the NEC in a flash and understands it (that's amazing to me)! But the motor calculations, the voltage drop, and parallel and series calcs on resistors just blow his mind!

I believe all that stuff is in the ugly's book. Ugly's does have parallel and series calculations. If he had more time Mike Holt's materials on those subjects are awsome and explained in a understandable manner. Did he try the local library??

Thanks, I had already sent him to Mikes free stuff, and loaned him all my stuff including my ugly book and Mikes understanding the nec 2002. I spent 2 hours yesterday and he seems to be starting to get a grasp of it.

I found the problem with why he doesn't understand the formulas. Today he brought in the calculator he's been useing to get and check his answers........ An old Electricalc II, something must be wrong with it. It is giving wrong answers! I dug out the old one (same model) from my truck. He would plug in the same values on both and get a differant answer on them. But the answer on mine was right. I told him that he needs to learn the formulas, because I don't think he can use it on the test anyway. I loaned him mine, but told him only to use it to check his answers afterwards.

Here in Utah you can't use a programable calculator to take any license exam. It has to be a simple calculator.

Same here in NH - simple calculator. Using a programmable would be cheatin'!

If he has Ugly's and spends some time studying through it, he should be fine. It's a matter of knowing where to go for that reference - and Ugly's is great. Couldn't use Ugly's in NY, but can in NH - and it's loaded with info - again, as long as you work through it.

Can't use ugly's here either You can use a scientific calculator just not a programmable one. He takes it at 7:30 in the morning, so all I can do now is keep my fingers crossed for him!
