I started a job today installing pumps in the bottom of a sewage basin (its actually just storm water runoff).

I have to take the SO cord out of the basin and to the pump control mounted on the wall of a building about 6' away.

The manufacturer's specs say I am not allowed to cut the cord cap off (not unusual), so my plan was to sleeve it in 1 1/2" PVC over to the controller/alarm.

How do you guys penetrate these basins? I have no prior experience with these. I dug a trench next to the manhole cover, and it appears to be about 6" thick, and looks like its made out of an asphalt type material.

Would a core drilling bit on a hammer drill work?

The utility contractor is a friend of mine, and I was going to call him and ask, but when I pulled my phone out I dropped it to the bottom of the basin which had over 12" of water in it (I was inside of it at the time).

Before I call him in the morning, I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone has experience with these.

Last time I worked on one, I asked the plumber to make me a hole while he was making his.

He used a coring bit on a hammerdrill like you suggested.

I used a 2" PVC sleeve that I hammered into place and "secured" with great stuff spray foam. .

Brant,

Core drill the hole up high thru the tank, then use a link seal fitting that is sized to fit around the pipe and inside the cored hole. The fitting is made of rubber and as you tighten the bolts it squezes around the pipe and tightnes to the edge of core.
