Hey guys, i will be taking my journeyman's exam soon in Virginia and there's some things i have been struggling to grasp regarding calculations, if someone can educate me I would appreciate it. I'm really wanting to know how these are handled in regards to the exam.

  1. The continuous load on commercial calculations (ie. show windows, signs, etc.) is throwing me off. My understanding is if you are doing a load calculation you don't include it (which is confusing in itself), but if your calculating service or feeders you include it? On the test how would the question be worded so I know when to apply it? Or is it safe to always apply them?
  2. For 310.12 do you always apply the 83% when applicable on a calculation question? If it's only certain scenarios what do I need to look out for wording wise?

considering there are so few load calculations, and they take a LOT of time, i'd recommend skipping them and coming back to them at the end, if you have time left.

having said that, you need to differentiate the difference between the calculated load, and the required minimum conductor size. 310.12 is only for sizing dwelling service conductors and feeders that feed the entire unit. calculating load has it's own set of requirements. have you gone through some of the examples in the back of the code book? there are some good ones there that will walk you through, step-by-step how to do a few load calculations, properly.
