I have a small (3kW) piece of equipment that an owner would like to connect. As I understand euro wiring there is one grounded conductor and one 220v to ground conductor. The owner teels me there is two pins on the cord end of this equipment.

My question is: (assuming the voltage tolerance is acceptable) would connecting this machine up 208 / 1 phase make this machine run properly? It seems to me like the problem I will have is in the event of a short there is ground for it to go to.

I understand the issues will listing ect, but this machine will only run for a couple hours then go back to europe.

Thanks for the help.

We just one through this exact same scenario with a piece of equipment from the UK. The manufacturer ended up sending us a transformer to get us 240V L-N rather than us hitting it with 240 L-L.

It's worth your time to contact the manufacturer......

If the plug has two pins then the appliance must be a class 2 appliance, double insulated. You can check this by looking for the double insulated mark on the appliance; its two boxes one inside the other.

You should be able to connect this directly L-L in your application.

If the plug has three pins (ie there is a ground (earth) pin present) then thats a different matter.

What's the difference between the two?
