So my local PoCo got bought up by Commonweath Edison err Exelon. They have been running out yanking out perfect good 40 yo poles just because they fall down when leaned on, etc. (And cutting down trees with 110% enthusiasm.)

They are also adding RF-controlled 13.2KV disconnects as if they were going out of stock next week.

The controls are made by TELVENT but I don't see who makes the disconnects.

My question is: How are they powered? I would think they were run off batteries that float charged. But do they need a 240/120 secondary source? it's not obvious in this imagery, nor in person, if it is tapped from that. Plus I don't think every pole with one even has secondary feeds.

Or is there some small stepdown xfmr up top?

Err... Page 18 "Rapier GX" functionally resembles the upper end. It says "Optional internal VT for 15 kV version" which fits 13.2KV this side of the river; I know VEPCO uses 34KV. Does that VT imply any use beyond measurement?

BTW, nearby disconnects have not just the broomstick [SCADA link] barely visible seemingly within the frame of the disconnect, but also a 6-8" vertical whip higher up the pole. I assume that's sensing the primary presence.

Just as an fyi, it hasnt been VEPCO for many years; it's Dominion Power now.

Almost as a bad as telecoms & the Valley re: buyouts/assimilations.... Exelon turned up their nose at PEPCO several times; but since they bought in they have been replacing poles and adding disconnects like gangbusters.
