A recent issue of EC&M has an ad for an " HID Light Fixture Tester". Will indicate if lamp, ballast, or ignitor needs to be replaced. Does anyone have any experience with this device? Does it work?
(They are also available on E-Bay for $109. I don't know if this is the same vendor because their answering machine says they're closed until Jan 9. )

Re: HID Light Fixture Tester

We had one for florescent lamps, and never used it. For HID lamps you can test the ballast with a standard incandescent lamp, if the lamp lights the ballast is OK.

Yeah, but don't you have to disconnect the starter on a HPS ballast, or the incandescent lamp will blow?

I just carry a known good lamp and try it when I'm troubleshooting an HID fixture. If it ain't the lamp, it's the ballast. I generally install ballast kits, and don't bother with trying to find whether it's bad caps, starters, or ballast transformers. Replace the kit, and you're good to go.

Re: HID Light Fixture Tester

Thanks for the links.
I am currently using the "change out all the parts until it lights" method of troubleshooting.

Re: HID Light Fixture Tester

I am also using the change out all the parts method, except I also use the markup the bejenkies out of those parts method also when I do this sort of stuff. I bet a lot of you guy's do the same thing. Those are great links. Thanks
