Hi guys just curious what is the going rate for a high hat install. The cieling is up and i am adding 4 cans to there living room. Wire run is about 30 feet. Also this is in New Jersey.

Remodel cans are like 8 dollars a piece at Home Depot, and most of the guys on Craig's List get about 12 bucks an hour. I'd say that anthing more than 20 bucks a can, installed, is a total ripoff.

Yep! We wouldn't want to earn a profit, after all we are not plumbers!

I won't tell you what to charge but I will tell you that 1 man (myself) has done that job in less than 4 hours with travel to and from the job 8 miles away. I had attic access but had to pull up some flooring and I had to fish a switch down.

The hardest part is laying it out to avoid floor joist and getting the correct spacing.

I won't tell you what to charge either, but the "going rate" in your area is probably anywhere between $75 to $150 per can. Yes, that's a wide range but we can't all seem to get on the same page with our pricing.

make sure the locations are accessible in the attic. they may be under a false gable and you will get a headful of roof nails.

Here are some high hats:

Marc, Does that include a permit?.....

with a clear attic to work in, i charge .75 labor hrs per can, plus the material needed for each can. tying in to an existing lighting outlet in the ceiling is .5 labor hrs, and to add a new switch it depends on where I have to get power from, how far down the wall, etc. . . .

If I were adding 4 cans and tying on to an existing switch leg, I would charge just under $600. The can, trim, (lithonia) and bulb I use are about $27 at cost. Average time for this job (on-site) is around 2 hours, but I've had some take longer.

I charge about a $100 ea. Not counting the lights. If it is more then ten I'll go down some. Sometimes they want the eyeball trims, they cost more.
Use the IC rated.

i can tell you that if Trovmar opens his local phone book, the 1st 2 companies with ads under "Electrical Contractors" will both be over $200/light....they may toss in the switch for free...:D

this is right in his backyard...

Old work for the guys on the top of the list in my area is more like $225 to $250 a light.
