High Mast Lighting - Grounding/Lightning Protection

I've read several posts discussing grounding of light poles and how an equipment ground is all that is necessary. What about high mast lighting? Do those poles need some type of grounding system? I know the pole has a lightning rod installed, but does it need to be connected to something?

High or low you would ground the same way. Why would you think it would be any different?

If lighting hits the pole, the fixtures are toast.
The ground rod will not protect the concrete foundation. Bond the rebar cage the anchor bolts and include an equipment ground in the branch circuit. If you are concerned with lighting damaging the electrical equipment at the service install TVSS on all conductors to the service.

Re: High Mast Lighting - Grounding/Lightning Protection

If your concern is lightning protection for high mast towers, the best protection you can get is simply bonding the anchor bolts to the rebar in the foundation. There is no need for any other additional down conductors or even a rod at the tower. If the tower (metal) is bonded to the concrete encased electrode (rebar in the foundation)then if lightning hits the tower hopefully most of the energy will be dissipated at that tower and not continue thruout your wiring system. Of course your fixtures on that tower will be toast.
