Re: High School woodshop

Not typically with good housekeeping.

For Class II, NFPA 499, defines "Combustible Dusts" as "Any finely divided solid material 420 microns or less in diameter (i.e., material passing through a U.S. No. 40 Standard Sieve) that presents a fire or explosion hazard when dispersed."

This would also apply to Class III. The concern is generally the prevention of "build up."

Re: High School woodshop

Wood dust from sawing and drilling applications is typically Class III . Wood dust from very fine sanding maybe considered "wood flour" and therefore would be Class II Group G.

Re: High School woodshop

Sometimes our AHJs' will require "bell boxes" and WP lights....for woodworking shops

Re: High School woodshop

Classifying a high school woodshop Class III makes about as much since as classifying a residential kitchen Class I because of a gas oven. In fact, I could make a stronger case for classifying the kitchen from the fundamental definitions:
500.5 (B) Class I Locations. Class I locations are those in which flammable gases or vapors are or may be present in the air in quantities sufficient to produce explosive or ignitible mixtures. Class I locations shall include those specified in 500.5(B)(1) and (B)(2).

(2) Class I, Division 2. A Class I, Division 2 location is a location
(1) In which volatile flammable liquids or flammable gases are handled, processed, or used, but in which the liquids, vapors, or gases will normally be confined within closed containers or closed systems from which they can escape only in case of accidental rupture or breakdown of such containers or systems or in case of abnormal operation of equipment,or...
By the fundamental definitions, a leak in the pipeline to my clothes dryer when I first moved in to my home created a Class I Division 2 location. You can argue about whether it was a breakdown or not ? this is the kind of hair-splitting an AHJ could make.

The mere presence of wood shavings doesn?t create a Class III location.
