Hello Everyone,
I'm new here but not new to the NEC. I obtained my CT E-1 license back in 1988 and one of the questions that I remember seein on my test was How big do the letters HIGH VOLTGAE have to be when used to mark a panelboard or disconnect. I can not find the ansower in the 2005 Code book and was wondering if anyone here might be able to help me. I recently started teaching a NEC class for first year appentices and wanted to include that question on a test. I remember the answer being 1/2" tall letters.
Thanks in advance for your help and hopefully I'll be able to provide some help back to you.

Re: HIGH VOLTAGE How big should letters be?

This is from 314.72(E)
Covers for boxes shall be permanently marked ?DANGER ? HIGH VOLTAGE ? KEEP OUT.? The marking shall be on the outside of the box cover and shall be readily visible. Letters shall be block type and at least 13 mm (? in.) in height.
But I not sure if this would apply to panel boards?

110.34(C) has simular requirment for buildings, rooms, or enclosures containing exposed live parts or exposed conductors operating at over 600 volts. But does not have the height requirment for the letters?

Welcome to the Fourm.

Re: HIGH VOLTAGE How big should letters be?

314.72 is only for over 600 volts.

But, do you really want to put a question on a test if you can't find the answer to it?

Steve There is no requirment if the voltage is under 600 volts.
I think there are some OSHA requirments that apply as I have used many 480 volt signs.
110.27(C) requires warning signs, as well as 110.31(B)(1), and 450.8(D) requires it for transformers. But I have not found anywhere it states how big the letters have to be other than the above.

Re: HIGH VOLTAGE How big should letters be?

Part of the problem was that I couldn't remember the question, I only knew the answer to be 1/2" high letters for the words High Voltage. I never was any good at JEOPARDY anyway! Thanks for the references everyone.
