can you use emt to feed motor starters and motors from starters from a 4160 volt service?if not what kind of conduit is required? motor is in a mechanical room conduit to be run in cieling.job in nyc.

The answer is no. The NYC electrical code is an amended version of the 2002 NEC. The amendment of Article 300.37 states that only RMC, IMC, PVC encased in 3" of concrete or in busways shall be permitted.

(Edited after checking information provided above.) The above answer is based on Local Law #41 which is out of date. The new reference is Local Law 81. I see no amendment in the local law #81 version so I'm assuming that EMT is now permitted. Sorry for the error. You can look at all of the amendments here:

Here is another general 2002 NEC perspective.

If 4160vac + rated insulation meets NEC Tbl 310.63-4, it can be used for svc.entrance 230.41, and spaced using Tbl. 310.60. Other requirements make some MV cables in above-ground EMT possible; NEC 110.36, 300.35-37 & related areas. Be careful, since 230.3, 695.6, etc., wont allow it without industrial-supervision exceptions. Local codes, AHJ's, and building specs, would also need to be checked.

Couldn't find how above-ground conduit access is restricted or marked for high voltage? Would hate to work around this blindly, since higher-voltage insulation leaks to conduit are less likely to trip OCD's.
