ouch

I was twisting a neutral on a fiberglass ladder, my finger was touching near the pivot of a pair of linesmans pliers and my elbow grazed some A/C ducting. I managed to stay on my ladder, and the duct was severly dented. My right pointy finger still hurts years later.

277 for me, but what really scared me is I was about 30' in the air.

For you guys that got hung up, didn't it seem like it took forever to let go? I had a whole converstation with myself and am pretty sure that I was on there for no more than a few seconds.

What's the highest voltage you've been bitten by?
As a kid:
9v battery on the tongue, once.
90v battery in a portable tube radio battery, once.
Spark-plug wires, a couple of times.
Phone ringing while playing with the wires, once.
120v helping dad replace a switch, once.
Static shocks, way too many to count.

As an alectrician:
15Kv from a neon transformer while on a 30' aluminum ladder near the top of a 2-story building, once.
277v, never.
240v (line-to-line, Bob ), once.
120v, maybe 4 or 5 times.

So, I guess the answer is 7.5Kv (center-tap grounded, Bob. :D)

You know what I mean, most times people say something like'I got hit with 50 amps 240' but when you ask about it it was to ground.
Exactly, which is why I ribbed you.

It's like the way people say that two cars going 60mph hitting head on is like one car hitting a wall at 120mph.

Hung up on 277 once. 220 several times in Germany. Most memorable as a kid mowing lawn barefooted and when trying to stop motor with ground strap that the old mowers had I hit the sparkplug with my big toe. I screamed so loud that my dad thought I got my foot in the mower.

I've always been inpressed with the people tough enough to reach around with a clamp-on and see how much current they are getting hit with. Man, you got to be tough to get across 240, take time to measure the 50A and then get loose.

Few of us are dumb enough to go line to line.

I got it 480 phase to phase in a plastic extruder control panel.

I've been bit by 120 a couple of times. Got bit by 277 once off one leg of a motor starter. That one realy hurt and it realy scared me. I took to wearing cotton gloves around live stuff after that. I wear them when I'm inside resi panels pulling wires. I also own a pair of line mans gloves rated for a thousand volts. Rarely need those anymore. While the cotton gloves are not rated for any voltage they will prevent the "casual shock'.All in all I hate getting shocked. After 30 years in the business I have no respect for electricity. I remain scared to death of it!!:D
