"Historical house" light fixtures

I am wiring a project that has 3 rooms that the city has said need to remain untouched.The problem is we have to leave with the old system fuctional,But I am not willing to take on the liability of the old wiring in the 7 existing luminaires.They are not in J-boxes and have no UL listing.the wires are not in good condition. This is a house with knob and tube,we will be replacing all of the knob and tube with romex.Question, can I rewire the lights with new UL listed parts:wire, sockets,etc. and have it be NEC complient? I don't want to get in a long debate with the city about this as I would not be paid for my time to do so.I would rather do what is the safest for the end user "future owner" any code refrences would be helpful. side note these "un-touched rooms look like hell to start with, and a heating contrator fell through the ceilling of one, he was not hurt but now there is a 5'x2' hole in the finish ceilling. Unrelated but amusing. Thanks in advance.
 
I would make sure the fixtures are properly grounded, protect the circuit with a GFCI and forget about it.

You can rewire them, I don't believe that there is a general requirement for fixtures to be listed at all unless they are in wet or hazardous locations.

They only have to be 'approved' see the definition in article 100.

How do we ground a fixture thats on K&T

I tend to agree with your reasoning (liability).
This qustion might be best asked of the "Historical Society" that is playing watchdog over this project.
 
You might be able to find a lighting company in your town that takes an interest in restoring old fixtures. I inherited a chandelier made in 1959 and rewired and restored it last year. There's a shop here in town (and I forget the name) that stocks a large collection of UL-listed repair parts. Really obscure items that I was afraid I'd never be able to find. You might check around your area and see if there's a shop that deals in antique fixtures and try to get them to restore and rewire the fixtures for free, perhaps in exchange for being listed as a "sponsor" or something.

No, seriously, I have already drilled and tapped a 10-32 hole in an obscure place on the fixture for that purpose. If I was completely honest, I'd tell you that I just put the old fixture back up at least 3/4 of the time with no grouding. If I am provided an old fixture where none existed before, then I will struggle to ground it. If I reinstall the same old fixture where it was before, I didn't make the installation any less safe than it was before.

Here in MA we actually have a 'rule' that basically says just that.

I can work on an existing non-compliant installation and I don't have to bring an entire installation up to current code as long as I don't "increase the magnitude" of the violation. :)

darn it I only have a #2 solid as the smallest mold for cadweld.Do they make a wire nut that size #2 to #14????????? Or should I cadweld a three way tap#2x#14to canopy. Mabe I should ground the sheet metal guys tool bag also,For a softer landing>>>>> Ya I like that idea.How much bounce should I be able to get out of #2 solid? He is about 180 lb. ceilling is about 10' where he came through. I think the equation may be 180 lb x 120" x 32' per second = ??? :)
