I'm tring to find a set tool like the ones I used when I worked for other contractors. I thought it was called a hollow wall set tool. You used this tool by threading it onto the ancor, then inserting the ancor into the hole, then you hit the set tool with a hammer, and then you used a pair of channel locks to spin the tool back out of the ancor. I've tried googleing it but all I see is the pound in set tool that does not thread into the ancor. That tool I thought was for drop in ancors. Anybody know what the correct name of this tool is? Thanks

Called an "anchor expander".

In my area it is refered to as a "lead caulk in anchor". They come in 1/4 -20 and 3/8-16 machine screw sizes the anchors are not suitable for cieling use as they melt and fail in a fire.

I've never been told that, I have to keep that in mind next time.
I would think the concrete would fail before a lead anchor would melt.

The first time I heard that it was from a Fastenal counter guy. I was looing for something to anchor some low-bays to a concrete ceiling. I forget what we came up with. I think Large Diameter Tapcons.

Yes sorry for misspell before I have corrected it. lead melts at about 621.43 degrees I think not that hot for a fire. These anchors are great you just drill a hole with some clearance to the back and they set perfectly to the front every time.

Except when you're using them in CMU's, then you need the anchor expander tool. I use this tool with the double expanding anchors sometimes too.

We just use steel wedge anchors for ceiling work.....that is if we can not shoot in a fastner.

Setting,

Setting,

I drill in the middle of a block or to the webs on either end, I never use this application on grout lines. I use the cheap wrap tape around the drill bit, to mark travel distance and refresh accordingly. Its a pricely little tool
and have worn out a few...

How well does it work in a hollow CMU?
I favor the epoxey anchors with screen tubes.
are by far the best in a cmu hollow try them out the tool is a little pricey get one on ebay cheap

To the OP, you might also hear this tool called an "Ackerman Tool", becasuse Ackerman-Johnson made these lead caulk-in anchors for probably 100 years. What most people would call an Ackerman setting tool is a shaft that is struck with a hammer, meant to set these anchors in holes that have a bottom. This tool generally comes in each large package of caulk-in anchors. The Greenlee type, for hollow walls, some older guys are calling a 'hollow wall Ackerman tool'. Just a little FYI, in case you hear that on the jobsite someplace.
