I have a customer that wants me to use 3 of these over a kitchen island: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...ant+conversion+kit&storeId=10051#.ULZ-wIW6XA8

They are UL listed but look dubious to me. Looks like you're supposed to anchor them to the drywall, or maybe screw through into the recessed can...? Has anyone used these before? And then screw the fixture bar to the plate they supply. Can't get the "video" to run, keep getting a "bad script error".

They work fine for hanging Martini lights or small pendants. Obviously not the right choice

for a large chandlier or a fixture over the range also used as a pot hanger.

The one I have is "The Can Converter" by JSB Enterprises. Read the instructions, they can be

intimidating the first time.

I was able to watch the video. That backplate does mount to the sheetrock with those molloys. Then they show you how to mount the fixture bracket to the plate, plug it in and twist it into that backplate like a smoke detector. Then they tell you it's good for 50lbs.:D I did one from my supply house once and it was a pain in the neck but it wasn't just attached to the sheetrock it somehow attached to the old can. Pretty hard to walk away from that with a chandalier hanging over the table like the claim on the video.

I could see these being rated for 50 lbs if it's screwed into a new work frame that was attached with nails or screws (not just the tabs). I can't imagine it's good for 50 lbs. if just attached to the drywall, but that's what they imply by saying it works with "retro" cans...

I have used the can converters from our lighting supply company and they worked fine. You will have a medallion. If the fixture is bigger than the opening I will install a fan retro bar and put some sheetrock around the hole-- neater job imo.

Thanks for all the replies. The old work fan box is a good idea if the fixture covers the hole, which it probably won't. I don't think I would trust these even for small glass pendents without screwing through the drywall into the bottom of the recessed housing.

That's pretty cool.

These conversion kits are as strong as the can that is in the ceiling. You use the screws that hold the can to the frame to support the fixture. I would not use a retro recessed can.
