Home Owner Upgrade Help - please

Good afternoon and thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

I am my own contractor in building a garage apartment in back of existing residence. I must upgrade my main power feed and can have only ONE meter. Georgia Power is going to upgrade my service to "400 Amps" and have given me the proper meter box. From this meter box I am to feed two "disconnect switches" before wiring one to the existing house and one to the new garage apartment.

My huge questions are these:
1. What size wire do I use to go from the meter to the weather head?
2. Where do I buy the requested "Disconnect boxes" and what do I ask for?

Thank you very much for any help that members of the forum can give me.

Fred I do not know the licensing requirements in Georgia but I would say you are in over your head and should get an electrician to do at least the service upgrade for your project.

Other than the size wire from the weatherhead to the meter you have not provided enough info to give you the info on disconnect sizes and feeder sizes.

Have you done load calculations to determine the size service your new building needs?

What size is your existing service?

Where are you locating the equipment?

What are the distances involed?

What wiring method are you using, SER, PVC, RMC?

You did not ask about what size ground wire you will need to run and where, this is a major issue not to be left as an afterthought.
