Is it required to upgrade a 30 year old home in New York that has a 150 amp service to current standard? The the service is grounded with #6 braided aluminum to the water pipe and to a grounding rod outside.

The quick short answer based on the question as worded is there are no requirements to do any work to the house, unless it may be for sale. If it is for sale, there is a 13 page document (Property Management Code) that is part of the NYS Fire and Prevention Code. That document would require the installation of smokes and a CO detector if they are not already present.

What about the isue of upgrading the ground from the power panel. Today it has to be grounded both sides of the water meter. When the house was built it was ok to ground it to a water pipe or out side to a rod...does it have to be upgraded when sold>?
