The quick short answer based on the question as worded is there are no requirements to do any work to the house, unless it may be for sale. If it is for sale, there is a 13 page document (Property Management Code) that is part of the NYS Fire and Prevention Code. That document would require the installation of smokes and a CO detector if they are not already present.
