I got a call the other day from a home warranty company asking if I was interested in doing work for them. I was in the middle of an estimate at the time, so they said they'd call back the next day when I was planning on being in the office. Of course, they never called back.

Anyone have any experience working with one of these outfits? My gut tells me it's not for me, but I'd be interested to hear about any good/bad experiences other ECs have had.

Re: Home Warranty Companies

It's flat fee work, based out of their book. If you need work to keep somebody busy every once in a while, it's okay. For me, I can do without it.

Re: Home Warranty Companies

I was contacted as well from one of these warrantee companies.
They sent the forms and I filled out what my charges would be not what the want to pay. If they want me this is the price. Otherwise they can get someone else.(and probably will)
I set my costs not anyone else.
Oh by the way, I haven't been contacted for any work yet.

Re: Home Warranty Companies

Did a couple jobs for these people. Problem arises at the house where the HO "knows" it is covered under the warranty but the warranty company says no. Now we end up in an arguement, have to collect the "deductible", customer is PO'd.
The warranty companies are real picky on their payment procedures also. You need to cross the t's and dot the i's. If you don't have the correct the authorization number, forget it you won't get paid.
I threatened to take one of these jerks to court and he said go ahead. We have lawyers everywhere. I'm sure they do!
Bottom line is this...when they call now, we say "NO."

Re: Home Warranty Companies

we have customers like this as well. they have their forms to fill out and procedures to follow. its a pita for our clerical staff.

but they are quite profitable and its a lot of repeat business.

i would not give up on a customer just because I was unable to follow their procedures properly. you could well be missing out on a lot of profitable business that just falls in your lap.

Re: Home Warranty Companies

I don't think much of Home warranty Companies. I have done a few jobs for different ones just to see if there is any money to be made. I didn't have any problems with the paper work. It's just that their pay rates are low and slow. Homeowners don't like finding out that they are not covered for most everything. I think that the whole business is a rip off.
