Dumb question: Got transferred here about a year ago, so I don't know if my question is relevant to all areas of Chicago, but, why are outlets in "Chicagoland" mounted sideways? They are in my new home in Elgin and they are in Hoffman Estates (a 15-year-old building).

I'm not from the area, but I would guess that it's tradition or a local code. There is no NEC reason for it, but it may be a local rule.

Maybe someone would rather have a "neutral up or down?" discussion than a "ground up or down?" one.

Are they mounted in the baseboard or in the sheetrock wall?

I doubt they even sell those in the Chicago area.

They only use EMT with very little FMC.

NM is taboo for any type of occupancy in that area.

Hi guys! I'm new to the group, from chicago and just wanted to comment on this thread.
I really don't know the reason either, lol. Like it was said previously "thats just the way it is"...

When I started back in the early 80's we always used those beloved ivory crackle finish metal outlet plates ( before this plastic revolution), and anyone who worked downtown near our beloved 'el' trains can tell you about those 6-32's working themselves loose and the plate hanging there balanced on the hot blades of those not all the way plugged in plugs!! i always believed for safetys sake the ground hole should have pointed to the left ???
