I'm assuming this is a general theoretical test question. Is so, it's more than 500W but less than 1000W. :D

Yes. But don’t let that simple fact mislead you. If you are simply looking for a unit conversion, like “twelve inches equals one foot,” then yes, 746 watts equals one horsepower.

However, if you are in the middle of a calculation that began with a mechanical requirement, you need to be careful with the term “horsepower.” A mechanical designer may tell you that his pump puts our 1 horsepower of work. You cannot translate that into a motor that draws 746 watts, because there will be some losses (i.e., inefficiencies) within the machine. In order to pick the motor size and the conductor sizes, you need to divide by the efficiency (typically on the order of 85%). In other words, “horsepower mechanical” is different than “horsepower electrical,” and the difference is efficiency.
