hospice storage/maint room

I have an architect posing a question about a maint/storage room. It is possible that a lawnmower and gas can could be stored in this area. Do the electrical devices need to be explosion proof?

I'm inclined to say no. But you might want to check with the local building codes. They might prohibit storage of gasoline containers in the type of room you have in mind.
