I Have A Hospital That Is Going To Expand And Build A New Building And They Are Thinking About Moving The (4) 1750KW Generators From The Basement Of The Older Hospital Building And Build A New Central Utilities Plant And Put All The Generators For The Existing Hospital Building And The New Hospital Building In One Location.

My Question Is It The Code Does Not Appear To Accept This Type Of Arrangement If You Read 517.35(B)(1) Since The Generators Will Not Technically Be Located In The Same Building As The Hospital.

I Know I Have Seen Other Hospital Campuses With The Central Utilities Plant Concept. And I Was Wondering If Anyone Else Had Any Experience With This Problem.

Re: Hospital Generator Location

The generator has to be on the premises, not the building. It is preferred to not have them in the building.

Premises...A piece of real estate, including buildings there on.

Re: Hospital Generator Location

Four 1750 Watt generators!!
That's one big hospial, or the generators are way oversized. If you are involved in moving them, you may want to get NFPA 99 (Health Care Facilities) and NFPA 110 (Emergency Power Systems).

Re: Hospital Generator Location

Steve,
Yes It Is A Large Hospital. But The Generators Are Oversized Also. A Load Study Was Completed And They Can Get By With (2) Generators So We Are Planning To Use This To Our Advantage And Move Two At A Time. When The New Building Goes Up Within The Next 3 Years They Are Thinking Of Adding (2) More 2000KW Units Which Seems Like Overkill To Me But We Will See How The Loads Come Out.
