As a licensed contractor and electrician in my state, I am the Facility Manager of a health care business. I oversee all of the contractual work and construction improvements of our buildings. We are expanding into a new location, where a public school is being newly built. The design of the area where we will provide health care to the students is integral to the school and the wiring being specified does not consist of the Hospital Grade MC or (AC Cable).

THe architectual firm is relying on the definition of a health care facility from NFPA 101 and as a result classifiying this as a business. I am concerned the the NEC 517. takes over with its definition of a health care facilities and requires it. Opinions?

Depending on what will take place in the facility will dictate the wiring requirements. Section #18 of NFPA 101 pertains to new health care facilities and deals with means of egress, lighting, etc. 517 will dictate the wiring requirements for examination rooms etc.

Typically these areas of schools are for letting a student hang out until they can be picked up and taken somewhere like home. If the Architect is not calling it healthcare and the plans have been approved I would go with that.
