I just received a roll of supposedly hospital grade MC but it is not a green armored shield but is labeled on the packaging HCF. Is this hospital grade and once installed how will a visual tell between the two??

There is no requirement for HCF grade AC cable to be green. I have seen HCF grade AC cable that from a glance looks just like standard AC cable. If anyone questions the install just show them the tag from the cable or else just show them a striped piece of the cable.

Hospital grade AC cable has the bonding strip in contact with the sheat and also an insulated EGC.

I think we are talking about two different cables. The OP mentions MC and the post was about Type AC cable

Health care mc cable has an insulated grounding conductor and a bare bonding conductor. The cable that I have seen is green but if it isn't and the listing tag states that it is health care cable keep the tag. Ac cable has the conductors wrapped in paper an mc does not. Health care ac cable has been on the scene longer than health care mc cable.

It would be Health Care MC AP made by Southwire. AFC makes AC cable.
The MC AP is a cross between MC and AC. The Health Care MC AP has an insulated EGC and and the armor qualifies as EGC path.

Hospital grade MC AP has not been out long. The reason that I mentioned AC cable is that the majority of heath care facility cable is actually AC cable and not MC. It has been common pratice in my area for years to call heath care facility grade AC cable MC even though it is wrong.

That is exactly what I do in Rhode Island. RI requires 'RI Approved' MC cable for fire alarm use, so I save every tag from each roll or spool and save them right in the fire alarm panel in case I am ever asked. I never have been but I like being ready.

We recently bought a pallet of HCFC that was old stock from before manufacturers started making it green, we simply offered the tags and a short piece of the cable to who ever was interested.

jwire what is ri mc cable and why is it used with firealarms? Here we geberally use a two pair conductor that looks a lot like tele wire with the foil strip for a ground and 14/16 single conductors
