I am new to this site and want to say thanks for all the great reading. I have a question i was hoping i could get some help with. Do the receptacles in dentist office patient care areas need to be hospital grade? All can find is in 517.18 were they are required in bed locations. The rooms i am questioning is what they are calling the opertory rooms. Basicly the rooms were the chairs are. Thanks for any help

Re: Hospital Grade?

I would say yes if the patient care area has the equipment to administer NO gas. The definition of Anesthetizing location also includes "the use of such agents for relative analgesia".

517.61(C) Other-than-Hazardous (Classified) Anesthetizing Locations. (2) Receptacles and Attachment Plugs. Receptacles and attachment plugs installed and used in other-than-hazardous (classified) locations shall be listed for hospital use...

Re: Hospital Grade?

Take note that "listed for hospital use" and "Hospital Grade" are not necessarily the same thing when it comes to devices.

Unless the AHJ classifies the areas as "Critical Care" and the chairs as ""Procedure Tables", Hospital Grade receptacles are not required.

See the definition of "Patient Bed Location" in 517.2

FWIW, I would install HG receptacles anyways due to the fact that the equipment used in these rooms will come with HG cord caps and an instruction attached to it to only plug into a HG receptacle.
