Hospital surge strips

In a Hospital setting does the NEC allow for the use of surge strips? Can they be used in Patient corridors if they are secured to the walls to provide additional outlets?

Welcome to the forum.

Just out of curiosity, why would additional outlets be needed in "patient corridors"?

It almost sounds to me as though the surge strips you are wanting to fasten to the wall are intended to become part of the permanent wiring for the building. If that is the case I would say that more receptacle outlets need to be installed using a chapter 3 wiring method.

The surge strips are used to plug-in portable carts with labtops. There are at times 3 to 4 labtops plugged in at a time. Storage is always an issue and the labtops need to be located close to the paitents.

That makes sense but my vote would still be to add more receptacle outlets. If you have a duplex outlet available that you are planning to utilize for the plug-strip it typically isn't that difficult to expand from a duplex to a quad outlet at the same location. This could alleviate the need for the plug-strips altogether and maintain the integrity of the original wiring method.

Thanks Pete. That is also my line of thought. I was looking for something in the NEC to convince my Boss that this was something that needs to be done. Unfortunetly, we seem to be installing these surge strips in more locations everyday as it is a less expensive solution.
