We designed hospital with support of international consultant who designed the schematic design. they didn't recommend to use UPS for the patient critical care units(ORs, ICUs) while we used to do for the same projects. their justification was the NEC is not recommending to provide UPS power supply for hospital and large facilities (517.44).
Our concern is how to provide backup for medical equipments in critical care units.
also we need to know what is the meaning of (freestanding building).

517.40 Essential Electrical Systems for
Nursing Homes and Limited Care Facilities

(A) Applicability. The requirements of Part III, 517.40(C) through 517.44, shall apply to nursing
homes and limited care facilities.

Exception: The requirements of Part III, 517.40(C) through
517.44, shall not apply to freestanding buildings used as nursing homes and limited care
facilities

The criterion I would use is buildings having a completely separate foundation.

Emergency UPS(s) are a design issue. I would recommend installing... but I'm not the designer.
