My father-in-law just bought a hot tub that I am going to connect. The plate inside the elec cabinet says the ground wire must be the same size as the line wires. Any particular reason for this? What is wrong with using 250.122? I realize that if the manufacturer instructions say this, it would be a violation if you do not follow them, I just wondered what the reason for a #6 ground with my #6 feed would be. Thanks, Paul R

Paul, IMO the manufacturer is requiring this for a CYA (CTA looking from our point of view :) ) reason.

We need to remember the 250.122 size would be the minimum.

Not to mention the fact that the hot tub is filled with wet bodies. The manufacturer is probabally thinking a lower impedance ground is better than a minimum sized ground for the safety of his customers. After all, if a customer is tickled by his hot-tub, he might not buy another. I wouldn't.

Re: hot tub ground

I've seen a lot of new hot tub instructions that specify some wierd stuff, probably written by people who don't really understand electricity, like some of the instructions that used to come with electric dryers!
Our policy is to read those instructions and follow them exactly (provided there is no code violation). If something goes wrong with that tub and they send out a rep who sees you didn't follow their installation instructions, no matter how senseless, you are to blame for the failure.
