I will be wiring a hot tub and am having a few problems.I hope someone can steer me in the right direction.I am going to come out of the house with rigid pvc to a square d spa disconnect about 10' from the tub.

This is where i am getting confused i need to stay 5' away with disconnect.but do i need to stay 5 ' away with a j-box.I want to go under ground about 10 ' ( because door wall is there), Then mount a j-box on the wall and convert to fmc to the tub about 3-4'away. is this legal. Thanks for any help. Jason

Provided your Disconnect ( Switch ) is not within 5' and the conduit running underground to the junction box is at least 18" down if associated with the pool equipment and underground ....and you are using PVC where it emerges and not a switch but a sealed junction box I don't see a problem with it, I would however use all Non-metalic boxes and so on.

In the areas you are outside of the 5' and buried...the depth needs to comply with 300.5 on those areas.

Just dont forget that insulated copper grounding ( bonding ) conductor..;)

BUT then again.....others may disagree...;)

Jason the only problem that I have is with the FMC. I would use either Seal tite or carflex, probably the seal tite (lfmc). Eventually the FMC will rust and you'll have to repull anyway. I know that in itself will start a debate about conduit types... Look in Art. 348 (348.10 I think) for FMC use. I think there is a restriction on fmc being exposed.

Edited: I removed my post because I feel I was looking at the OP incorrectly.

New entry: I would tend to agree with the post from Radiopet. Should be code compliant.

concrete slab

concrete slab

If the hot tub is going to be on a concrete slab the 18" depth requirement does not apply and the slab is a great way to secure a riser section for a J-box and to secure a section of copper grounding rod as well.

Worthwhile to wire for 220v as the tub will heat twice as fast and the heater can run at the same time as the pump for the air jets.
