Re: HOT TUB INSTALATION

If the installation is at a single-family dwelling, then a disconnect is not required per 680.41 of the 2002 NEC. It will have to be GFCI protected, however, at the branch-circuit source supply location.

It is my understanding that 680.41 is for the requirement of an 'Emergency Switch' to shut off the motor in an emergency, and not the required disconnect means for the purpose of maintenance.

Re: HOT TUB INSTALATION

Bryan,

I believe that a disconnect for the purposes of maintenance is required per 680.12. This is to disconnect power to the unit so that it can be worked on safely. The Emergency switch referenced in 680.41 is only to stop the motor(s) of the recirculating system and does not necessarily disconnect power to the unit. My understanding is that this is provided for emergency situations like someone getting their hair or clothing caught somewhere, etc. and the object is just to shut down the pump(s).

Thanks guys, I agree. I was responding to the earlier posts that refered to 680.41 regarding emergency switch requirements. I should have been more clear!

FYI,

There is a Proposal to add a rule similar to 680.41 to the CEC (Canadian Code) and the following document includes that proposal with justification and comments. (and pictures)
