Hot Tub Install OK?

I installed a 6/3 romex from the sub pnl. The line goes outside in PVC, under the patio pavers, and stubs up under the Hot Tub. The Tub has a GFCI built in. Is a disconect needed? IF so, could I make it a cord connect tub? Also, is the access panel considered a barrier?

Any Feedback?

From you're short description your installation is full of problems. You need to review article 680. As Bob mentioned the NM in PVC is NG. Also the pavers need an equipotential bonding grid if your under the 2005 NEC.

iwire & infinity,

I read art. 680 2002. 680.42 (c) implies NM cable can be used. Also can the GFCI disconect be mounted to the wood wall of the self contained spa. It is within site? This was done by the homeowner and I'm trying to clean it up. I planed on putting the disconnect on the wall of the home during construction and feeding the tub in PVC. He went ahead and pulled the romex down a collum on the porch and in pvc under the Brick pavers. Any help would be appriciated.

I believe that is an interpretation issue, which leaves it to the AHJ to decide, IMO.

NEC-2002 300.5(D)(5) forbids the use of NM cable in RNC underground. NM is not listed for use in wet locations. The NM can be used on the interior of the house, but perhaps the easiest way to correct this would be to install a disconnect at the house, and install THWN in the PVC from there.

learned this one the hardway....check the hot tub manufacturers specs for wiring. Had one years ago that required that the wiring be in conduit from the main panel. The inspector actually looked thru the manual, said that several manufacturers were requiring it.

It's an older tub. He's bringiing it from his old home. Would a two pole GFCI breaker in the Panel feed ing the GFCI in the tub work? I'm worried about it tripping also. What if I skin back the romex 15 feet and put a romex conector into a threaded coupling and feed the thhn wires thorugh the PVC under the pavers? Trying to do this with out ripping out what he has done. He's a good friend but stubborn.

a pool or hot tub is not the place to take any shortcuts, if it is wrong, start over or tell your friend to get someone else to do it, and also make sure the hot tub is UL listed
