I am refreshing myself prior to helping a family member install a hot tub. I am reading in 680.41 that a emergency switch is not needed for a hot tub if it is installed for a single family dwelling. I have always installed local disconnects for hot tubs. Is this true or is my interpretation of this section incorrect?

Seems pretty clear that it is not required in a SFD. It would not hurt to install, but that is up to you and client.

680.41 Emergency Switch for Spas and Hot Tubs. A
clearly labeled emergency shutoff or control switch for the
purpose of stopping the motor(s) that provide power to the
recirculation system and jet system shall be installed at a point
readily accessible to the users and not less than 1.5 m (5 ft)
away, adjacent to, and within sight of the spa or hot tub. This
requirement shall not apply to single-family dwellings.

a small lever style 2pole non-fused disco that is for 680.13 also serves for 680.41 if labeled properly.

i use these
SIEMENS LNF222R 60 Amp, 2 Pole, 240-Volt, Non-Fused, Outdoor Rated

50A main std ocpd --> wire run --> 222r --> spa panel w/ gfi ocpd --> spa

but, you can also just do
gfi ocpd in main --> wire run --> 222r --> spa

the 222r provides lockout for maintenance, etc.

just to note, std "spa" panel is usually just a 2 position tiny panel for one 240v ocpd. if the location needs additional ckt for say sump pump or lighting i use the 4 position tiny panels, put 2pole gfi ocpd in center and 1pole gfi ocpd's on each side. and everything sized accordingly.

I say a "disconnect" is required unless the breaker is within site. An "emergency shut off" is not required for residential setting.

Welcome to the forum.

Bingo. A spa/tub at a sfd does not need an e-stop but it DOES need a disconnect that's visible from the tub. e-stop=/= disconnect, they are two different things.
